The maker's story · Chapter 01

I aimed at one school in Finland. It took six years to get in.

Not “somewhere in Finland.” One place. One name. I never traded it down.

Childhood · the spark

Angry Birds was the first proof I ever saw that a small team in Finland could build something the whole world plays. I was a kid when that landed. I decided then that I would make games in Finland one day — and I taught myself Finnish to chase it.

2020–2021 · the knock-back

COVID closed the first door in 2020. A visa closed it again. By 2021 I was stuck in a job that wasn't my path — then Peter Vesterbacka came to my city, Tashkent, and I ran across town to meet him. Something snapped back into place: I still knew exactly where I wanted to be.

2026 · the side door

So I stopped hunting for an easier option and went looking for the side route in. I kept the exact same goal the whole time. In 2026 I got into the exact school I had chosen from the start — the same place I first applied to.

Anyone can say “I moved to Finland to study.” Thousands do every year. Almost nobody names one specific target, gets knocked back twice, and still lands exactly there.

This map is for that second kind of founder: you already know the target, you just need the non-obvious path in — the side door, not the generic route. That is how I got here, and it is why I built this.

War room briefing · Where should you start?

Start in Finland, aim at Sweden.

Sweden is where AI and scale happen — and why you shouldn't start there. Prove your product with developers and early buyers in Finland, register lean in Estonia, then enter Stockholm with traction.

Doctrine: low barrier + ecosystem fit first → traction → bigger fronts.

Early game

  • Starttiraha · Start-up Grant

    +150 XP

Up to ~€15,000/year for living costs while you start. Non-dilutive.

How to apply · Apply via Job Market Finland (TE services) before you start full-time as an entrepreneur.

Timing · Rolling · apply before launching the business

Red alert · FATALThe Starttiraha vs. Y-tunnus guillotine

The lie: "Register your company first so you look official when applying for Starttiraha."

The reality: Starting full-time business activity before you receive the positive Starttiraha decision can disqualify you from the grant.

Survival move: Draft business + financial plan → submit Starttiraha → wait for the decision letter → only then register your Y-tunnus on YTJ.fi.

Mid game

  • Kiuas Start + Accelerator

    +200 XP

    4-week validation + 8-week accelerator; optional ~€25–50k pre-seed for ~5% equity.

How to apply · Apply to the next cohort at kiuas.com with team, problem and early traction.

Timing · Two cohorts a year · spring & autumn

    Apply / Register →Required: Lv 3
  • Business Finland · Tempo

    +200 XP

Early validation grant up to €60,000, covering ~75% of costs. Needs a 2+ person team.

How to apply · Book a Business Finland call, then apply online with a market-validation plan.

    Timing · Rolling

Red alert · HIGH RISKThe Tempo "€60k free money" myth

The lie: "Business Finland just wires you €60,000 to build your MVP!"

The reality: Tempo covers ~75% of the project budget. You need real cash self-financing for the rest (sweat equity doesn't count), share capital, a 2+ person team — and part of the grant is paid only after final reporting.

Survival move: Don't touch Tempo at idea stage. Use a university Draft-style micro-grant, Kiuas, or early customer/angel cash first to build your matching reserve.

    Apply / Register →Required: Lv 4

Seed capital and a board ally for crossing into Sweden.

How to apply · Book investor meetings around Slush with your traction metrics ready.

Timing · Slush · late autumn

Red alert · FATALCap-table poison: the "20% local advisor" grab

The lie: "Give our incubator/consultant 15–25% equity and we'll open doors for you."

The reality: When passive people hold a big slice of an early startup, Nordic VCs see a dead cap table and walk away.

Survival move: Typical advisor equity is 0.25–1% with vesting. Keep the vast majority of early equity with the active builders.

    Apply / Register →Required: Lv 6

Your status:
Red alert · HIGH RISKThe Kela student aid & unemployment cliff

The lie: "Incorporating with three friends while studying has zero impact on your benefits if the company makes €0."

The reality: You can't collect Starttiraha and student aid at the same time, and authorities may judge you a full-time entrepreneur (päätoiminen yrittäjä) by workload — even with €0 revenue.

Survival move: Stay pre-incorporation while validating. Collect LOIs or use light entrepreneurship (kevytyrittäjyys) for small test invoices until revenue or grant backing makes incorporating safe.

  • Red alert · FATALThe Starttiraha vs.

Quick question on daily workflows (Kajaani builder project — not a sales pitch)

Hi [First Name],

I'm a builder in Kajaani working on an early startup prototype aimed at [specific problem].

I'm not selling anything. We're in early discovery. Before we write more code, we want to make sure we aren't building in a bubble.

Would you or a team lead have 15 minutes next week? I'd love to show the rough prototype and hear honestly what wouldn't work on your floor.

Best,

The maker's route

The route on this map is the route I took: one specific target, two closed doors, and a side entrance nobody suggested.
